Meisje heads for Portugal

The first feature length film by the Belgium director Dorothée van den Berghe, Meisje, is continuing its excellent international performance. In fact the film has been selected to be shown at the 19th edition of the Troia International Film Festival (Portugal), which started this weekend and goes on until June 15.

The film was presented for the first time at Locarno in 2002, where it won the Youth Prize and the CICAE award, and Meisje also came away with the Special Jury prize and the Best Actress award at the 2002 Amiens Festival, as well as being shown at the Angers and Rotterdam festivals in 2003.

It is produced by K2 Productions, K-line, K-Star, Lumière Producties, Motelfilms and RTBF. Meisje is about Muriel (played by Charlotte Vanden Eynde), a young girl from the provinces who moves to Brussels in the hope of becoming self-sufficient. The film also stars Els Dottermans and Frieda Pittoors. It has attracted an audience of around 39,000 in Belgium.
