Dogville, applauded and debated

The home audience has given a warm response to Lars Von Trier’s international co-production Dogville [+see also:

The film was released in Denmark on June 4 in only 29 prints, and in its first weekend of programming it attracted an audience of 20,500.
It’s a positive response, in spite of the internal debate, centred around the criticisms from Louise Frevert, spokesman of the Dansk Folkeparti right wing political party, who has attacked the Danish Film Institute for supporting (with DKR 1.5m) an “anti-American propaganda manifesto”.
Frevert’s position has also been endorsed, though in more moderate tones, by Ester Larsen, from the liberal party, who has nevertheless defined Dogville as a “masterpiece”.
