A total of 24 titles are set to compete in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section of the 64th San Sebastián International Film Festival, which will take place between 16 and 24 September. To names like Bertrand Tavernier, Terence Davies and Jean-François Laguionie, announced several weeks ago (see news), we can now add those of Ivan Tverdovsky, presenting his surprising new film Zoology [+see also:

, a co-production between Russia, France and Germany; Thorsten Schütte, with rock documentary Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words [+see also:

(France/Germany); and Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues, who will be bringing his mystical adventure story, The Ornithologist [+see also:

(Portugal/France/Brazil), to try its luck in San Sebastián after being well received by audiences at Locarno.

Europe will be liberally represented - in addition to the Spanish contingent, made up of Koldo Almandoz (Ghost Ship [+see also:

), María Elorza and Maider Fernández (the duo behind Our Walls) and Mikel Rueda, with his short film entitled On the Path (read more), the selection includes Aaron Brookner’s debut feature, the documentary Uncle Howard [+see also:

(United Kingdom), as well as a number of co-productions. These include Where I Grow Old [+see also:

(Brazil/Portugal), a first sortie into fiction for Marilia Rocha, Memory Exercises [+see also:

(Argentina/Paraguay/France/Germany), the second film from director Paz Encina, and finally Dark Beast [+see also:

 (Colombia/Argentina/Netherlands/Germany/Greece), the debut feature from the hand of Felipe Guerrero.

A good number of this year’s crop of short films have also been drawn from the European scene. These include animated film 489 Years, by Hayoun Kwon (France), The Disco Shines, from Spanish director Chema García Ibarra (co-writer of Androids Dream [+see also:

) and Sarah Winchester. This last is Frenchman Bertrand Bonello’s second film in the competition, as his tense drama Nocturama(read more) will also be competing in the official selection. The Hedonists, a short film by Jia Zhang-Ke (China) will also be screening.

Other filmmakers set to surprise and delight audiences in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section include Pablo Álvarez (Chile), with The Stranger, and two directors from the USA: Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special) and Todd Solondz. Solondz will be presenting Wiener-Dog: a film whose main protagonist is a dachshund.

Elsewhere at San Sebastian, the projects selected for the 5th Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum (read more) will vie for a new development grant jointly offered by the Ibero-American Conference of Film Authorities (CACI) and the European Film Agency Directors Association (EFAD). The award, a total of 20,000 euros to be presented to the majority producer of the winning project, is aimed at promoting artistic collaborations between the two continents.
