39 European titles submitted for the Oscars race

- 39 out of the total of 85 submissions which will compete for the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 89th Oscars are European

The submission period for the Best Foreign-language Film at the 89th Academy Awards has come to an end. Last year, 81 features were submitted to the Oscars, but this year the number has increased to 85. 39 of the countries that have submitted films for consideration for nomination are European.

Son of Saul took home the award last year, making it the 56th European film to do so, and this year’s European submissions will be hoping to become the 57th. Nine finalists will be selected from the total number of submissions, before the Academy whittles that number down to five, announcing the nominees on 14 January 2017.
