Young flesh, fresh meat, romps between two, three or several people, healthy and uninhibited polysexuality, modern urbanites, a gigolo, a transvestite drug dealer, and a cannon full of foam all come together one summer morning at a villa with an ample garden and an inviting swimming pool. Tempting, right? Director and screenwriter Roberto Pérez Toledo invites the viewer to a huge party with all these elements (and more) in his new film, Like Foam [+see also:

If in his previous works Pérez Toledo allowed us to observe angelic actors playing the main roles in his short tales of love (and heartbreak), now his devotion to beauty has the potential to induce an almighty Stendhal syndrome in us as we watch this procession of semi-nude, celestial creatures that parade in front of our eyes in Like Foam: a group of around 15 characters that, after being summoned by phone messages, attend a surprise party that Gus (played by Nacho San José) organises for his friend Milo (performed by Carlo D’Ursi), who is confined to a wheelchair following an accident.

And of course, when more than three people meet up at a house with the desire to have a good time, things quickly get out of hand: there will be people coming out of the closet, unexpected reunions, cheating lotharios, vindictive pursuits, relationships in crisis, romanticism junkies and several alternating anecdotes that offer a multi-coloured mosaic representing some of the emotional and life crises of young millennials. Thus, despite the fact that almost everyone has come along to have a good time, deep down, they long to make up for their shortcomings and mend their broken hearts.

Although its trailer and stills may give the impression of a porn film, Like Foam is really a clean, mainstream ensemble romcom, where an orgy serves as the setting through which these beings deprived of affection wander. Thus, the unbridled fun and games, and cheerful gaiety depicted in its scenes belie a melancholy undercurrent and its therapeutic subtext, with admittedly fairly incoherent and ineffective conflicts. But all this makes for an enjoyable, light-hearted and flamboyant film that is likely to be a feast for the eyes on those sweltering summer nights: the movie will be released in cinemas in Spain on 2 June.

Like Foam is a production by Potenza ProduccionesPonyFilms and La Panda Productions (USA), in association with 7Cuerdas Films. The rest of the cast is made up of Sara Sálamo, Pepe Ocio, Diego Martínez, Dani Muriel, Elisa Matilla, Jonás Berami and Raquel Quintana. Its international sales have been entrusted to German company Media Luna New Films.
