The Romanian box office has seen growth of approximately 24.65% this year in terms of earnings, according to the country’s leading film website, Cinemagia. The exact increase in the number of admissions is impossible to evaluate, as one of the country's biggest distributors, Forum Film, stopped making the number of admissions for its releases public. During the first six months of 2017, Romanian cinemas earned a total of €32.81 million, marking a steep increase from the €26.2 million earned in the first half of 2016.

A significant part of this increase was thanks to the phenomenal success of The Fast and the Furious franchise in Romania. Fast & Furious 8 was seen by 683,826 cinemagoers, which makes it the most popular release since Avatar [+see also:

For comparison, the most popular film of 2016, Suicide Squad, raked in 421,000 admissions over 19 weeks.

Other popular releases were Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's RevengeFifty Shades DarkerBeauty and the Beast (also the film with the widest release this year, across 186 screens) and Assassin's Creed.
