The Distinguished Citizen is named Best Film at the 2017 Platino Awards
- Pedro Almodovar and A Monster Calls among the many Spanish winners this year
The Platino Awards have once again taken place, this time on our side of the Atlantic. The event, co-organised by EGEDA (which provides services for audiovisual producers) and FIPCA (the Ibero-American Federation of Film and Audiovisual Producers), which is trying to establish itself as a bridge between the Spanish and Ibero-American film industries, took place on Saturday in Madrid, bringing together a whole host of talented filmmakers and film professionals from both sides of the ocean.
The Distinguished Citizen [+see also:
film profile] by Argentinians Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, co-produced with Spain, won the awards for Best Film, Best Actor (Oscar Martinez) and Best Screenplay (Andrés Duprat).
Moreover, contrary to what happened last year (see article), most of the award-winners of this year’s edition of the Platino awards were Spanish. Pedro Almodovar won the award for Best Director for Julieta [+see also:

film profile], which also picked up the award for Best Original Score, which went to Alberto Iglesias. A Monster Calls [+see also:

film profile], J.A. Bayona’s blockbuster, meanwhile, took home the awards for Best Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Sound. Spain also bagged the awards for Best Animated Film and Best Documentary, which went to Psiconautas [+see also:

Sonia Braga came out on top for her performance in Aquarius [+see also:
film profile], winning the award for Best Actress and making up for her failure to win in competition at Cannes last year. The winner of Venice 2015, Les Amants de Caracas, was meanwhile named Best First Film.
