FESTIVALS France

Marseille, the world's Doc capital

by

In recent months and years, the documentary has steadily gained ground and prestige. Extremely popular with Europe’s TV programming editors, the success of titles like France’s Etre et Avoir reawakened the interest of producers and distributors as well. This year’s programme includes 35 films and the international jury, presided over by Taiwan’s Tasi Ming Lian, will be called on to judge the 20 titles selected from the 1,500+ submitted while the French jury, presided over by Alain Guiraudie ( Pas de repos pour les braves), will decide the best one of the 15 documentaries that include Jean-Louis Comolli’s eagerly awaited Jours de Grève à Paris Nord (Strike Days at Paris Nord).

The Marseille line up also includes a five-section overview of global documentary production: “Writers for the Screen”, “D as Docu”, “Caméra Nova”, “From Sound to Pictures” and “Based Upon The Stories”. Some 270 programming and commissioning TV editors will attend, 25 per cent more than did in 2002.
