Karmitz rules okay
Although the disruption created by the entertainment workers’ protest has put the problems being experienced by the French Distributors’ Federation (FNDF) in the shade, they went ahead with their annual general meeting early in July.
Marin Karmitz was confirmed as the FNDF president for a further twelve months. After the vote, Karmitz, who owns and manages MK2, said he will “continue promoting dynamic and quality cinema”.
The FNDF enjoys a good relationship with Gallic exhibitors and it is hoped that this will contribute to avoiding the flood of concurrent releases that damaged the domestic market in Nov-Dec 2002 and again in March-April 2003. To that end, the FNDF signed an agreement with exhibitors from the French Cinema Federation (FNCF) to bring some well-needed order to film releases. However, it remains to be seen whether this agreement can be implemented.
Meanwhile, the Independent Distributors’ Syndicate (SDI) voted in a new board. Following outgoing president Gérard Vaugeois's decision not to stand for re-election, the board appointed two co-presidents, Mima Fleurent from Colifilms Distribution (specialised in Iberian titles) and Vincent-Paul Boncour from Carlotta Films.
