ATTENDANCE Italy

No change on 2002

by

By and large, there was little or no change in Italian cinema attendance for the first six months of 2003 with respect to the same time last year.
According to data published by official theatre monitor, Cinetel (which covers 75 per cent of all Italian cinemas), the 2003 six-month ticket sale total stands at 43.180.000, - 0.12 per cent drop on the 2002 figure of 43.234,000 million.

Attendance in May and June brought the average into negative figures. Reported data for the first quarter of 2003 showed a 2.58 per cent increase on January-April 2002. January to May 2003 was up 1.84 per cent but adding June figures to the equation brought it down to minus 0.12 per cent.

The twelve-month year’s end forecast is for a 3 per cent increase, an improvement on other European territories like France and Germany but still behind Great Britain which seems set on becoming Europe’s biggest consumer of films at the cinema.
