ATTENDANCE Denmark

Scandinavian Stars

by

Danish films are the most popular Nordic titles in Europe and the United States. Media Desk Denmark and the Danish Film Institute and the European Commision’s Training and Culture Office compiled a list of the Top 20 best performing Scandinavian titles in Europe and the United States. The list was published by the Ritzau Agency. Between 1996 and 2002, 23.4million of total 37.6million tickets sold for Scandinavian films were for Danish titles. The result is largely due to the Dogma 95 phenomenon which focused world media attention on Denmark: the two most popular films were both by Lars von Trier: Dancer in the Dark with 5.3 million tickets and Breaking the Waves with 5milion. Next came Lone Scherfig’s Italian for Beginners (Dogma#12) with 3.9million and Thomas Vinterberg’s Festen – Dogma#1 with 3million.
