Redbad poised to complete post-production
Redbad by Roel Reiné

After being presented at the European Film Market in Berlin this February, Redbad is now finalising post-production and seems to be actively expanding its distribution network. Roel Reiné's upcoming feature is set in the eighth century and was inspired by the Northern European sagas and legends surrounding the Frisian King Redbad (Gijs Naber) and his sworn enemy Pepin of Herstal (Jonathan Banks), Lord of the Franks. The world of Redbad depicts the turbulent power struggles and wars between some of the historical factions in the Early Middle Ages, such as the Danes and the Saxons. Moreover, the cast of this action-packed feature is enriched by the presence of Huub Stapel (Zwarte TulpA Perfect Man [+see also:

Filming took 42 days in total and wrapped on 19 November last year. Redbad was shot in a number of locations across Europe, such as the PreHistorisch Dorp theme park in Eindhoven, the De Alde Feanen National Park in the province of Friesland, the Belgian Castle of Bouillon and the German village of Wallsbüll, located a few kilometres away from the Danish border. The movie is being produced by Klaas de Jong (AdmiralSneekweek) for Leeuwarden-based firm Farmhouse TV & Film Productions in co-operation with Bulletproof Cupid (Belgium) and Roel Reiné’s Rebel Entertainment (United States), and the script was penned in its entirety by Alex Van Galen, the author of several successful Dutch TV series, such as Sam SamRozengeur & Wodka Lime and Het Zonnetje in Huis. The overall budget allocated for this project amounts to €7 million, €1.8 million of which have been granted by Telescoop, a joint venture between the Dutch public broadcaster NPO, Dutch film commission Filmfonds and Co-productiefonds Binnenlandse Omroep, a Dutch-Belgian co-production fund.

The first sales deals were closed in February, when American distributor Epic Releasing, a subsidiary of Epic Pictures, acquired the North American rights and SRND the Middle Eastern ones. Other important agreements included France (First International Production), Germany and the Netherlands (Splendid Film), Spain (ADSO Films), and South Korea (Movement Pictures). In the last few weeks, Dutch firm Incredible Film has done a commendable job and has now announced a new raft of international sales deals. Redbad will therefore be released in Romania (Karpat Media), Turkey (Ozen Film), China (Star-D Group), the Russian Federation and other CIS nations (Cross Media), as well as Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic (Media Squad).

More recently, Incredible Film struck deals to distribute another Dutch feature, Dick MaasPrey. The film follows the story of a zoo veterinarian who is leading the hunt for a furious lion that is terrorising the city of Amsterdam. It is being distributed in France by Trade Media and in Japan by Zazie Films. Meanwhile, Redbad will be released in Dutch cinemas by Splendid Film on 28 June 2018.
