Saura’s latest story
- The Iberian director is on the set of El septimio dia, based on the real life massacre of Puerto Urraco where a family feud led to the death of nine people. Victoria Abril stars.
The Iberian Academy of Film Arts and Sciences is already debating which film to candidate for the 2004 best foreign film Oscar just as Carlos Saura began filming his latest feature, El Septimio dia on location in Segovia.
Produced by Lolafilms and Artedemis, it is the story of the 1990 murder of nine people and the wounding of 12 as a result of a bloody family feud in the tiny village of Puerto Urraco.
Saura was one of Luis Buñuel’s closest friends and he pulled together an international cast of stars for El septimio dia, lead by Victoria Abril, José Garcìa and José Luis Gomèz.
Known for his love of on-set improvisation, this film is the follow up to his 1999 Buñuel y la mesa del Rey Salomon and the extraordinary mix of music and dance of Salomé in 2002. He turned to a real life event for inspiration because “cinema is a marvellous and brutal art.”
