“Fantoche” livens up
One of Europe's leading animation festivals, the Fantoche - International Animation Film Festival is back after a four-year absence. The festival will unroll in the Swiss town of Baden from 9-14 September with a programme of 300-plus titles.
The organisers have dedicated an entire section to puppet animation, with two major retrospectives of the work of George Griffin and Igor Kovalyov, and six features are scheduled to premiere.
Absurd as it may seem, Fantoche was so successful in 1997 and 1999 that the organisers were forced to put off the 2001 edition: they did not have the infrastructure to handle the expected crowds. Frank Braun, the artistic director of Fantoche, promised that the 2004 and 2005 editions will receive public funding.
