- LOCARNO 2018: This year, the work-in-progress section of Locarno Pro was dedicated to Portuguese cinema, and two documentaries snagged the main awards
Campo, directed by Tiago Hespanha, has emerged as the big winner at the eighth edition of First Look, one of Locarno Pro’s best-established initiatives. Running for three days (3-5 August), this year, First Look aimed to showcase cinema from Portugal via six films currently in post-production, presented by their producers and directors to sales agents, programmers and industry professionals. The project was organised by Markus Duffner.
The awards were announced on Sunday by the international jury, including SXSW Film head Janet Pierson, the San Sebastián Film Festival’s artistic director, José Luis Rebordinos, and the Viennale’s artistic director, Eva Sangiorgi. The jury awarded the documentary film Campo, which is the fourth film by documentarian Tiago Hespanha and is being produced by João Matos of Terratreme – both well known for the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight title The Nothing Factory [+see also:

Another documentary, Pedro Filipe Marques’ Viveiro, received two prizes: the €5,500 Advertising Services Award from Le Film Français and another worth €5,000 from Kaiju Cinema D/ffusion for the creation of key art design. The film is being produced by Luis Urbano and Sandro Aguilar, of Lisbon-based O Som e a Fúria, which was also behind Miguel Gomes’ Arabian Nights [+see also:
