Newcomer chosen
At its 12 August meeting, the Hungarian Academy Awards selection committee announced that next year’s candidate for the best foreign language film Oscar nomination is Forest (Rengeteg), an experimental DV dogme-style directorial feature debut written and directed by Benedek Fliegauf. The film, which stars Rita Braun, Barbara Csonka, Edit Lipcsei and Katalin Mészáros tells of series of strange and mysterious events and is set in present-day Budapest.
It remains to be seen whether this title is one of the five selected by the Academy to compete at the 76th Awards, scheduled to take place on 29 February 2004 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. We will only find that out on 27 January when Academy president, Frank Pierson, announces the five finalists.
Forest has won a number of important Hungarian and international awards, including the Gene Moskowitz Award at this year’s Hungarian Film Week and the Wolfgang Staudte Prize at the 2003 Berlinale. Forest was produced by András Muhi of the Inforg Stúdió.
