and set during the desperate guerrilla war that took place during the last phases of the Second World War and the first few post-war years. During that period, between 1944 and 1953, Lithuania witnessed turbulent battles between local partisans and the Soviet forces, which resulted in more than 50,000 casualties on both sides and a failed attempt to restore the Baltic country's independence. The partisan war has already been depicted on the big screen in the past, most notably in Vytautas Žalakevičius' Nobody Wanted to Die (1966) and Jonas Vaitkus’ Utterly Alone (2004). The script of this new dramatisation has been penned by Bartas in tandem with actress Aušra Giedraitytė, whilst Eitvydas Doškus will serve as the director of photography.

The main cast includes actors Arvydas Dapšys (Zero 35 Days Scam), Salvijus Trepulis (Liars, Ashes in the Snow) and Rytis Saldžius (Owl MountainForest of the Gods) as well as newcomers Marijus Elijas Martynenko and Giedra Verbickaitė.

The feature is being produced by the director himself and Jurga Dikčiuvienė for Vilnius-based Studio Kinema, in co-operation with five European partners – namely, Sirena Film (Czech Republic), KinoElektron (France), Biberche Productions (Serbia), Terratreme Films (Portugal) and Mistrus Media (Latvia). Furthermore, the project has received a considerable part of its €1.8 million budget from several grants provided by the co-producing countries' film bodies – in particular, the Lithuanian Film Centre (€650,000), the Czech Film Fund (circa €115,500), Film Center Serbia (circa €100,500), the CNC’s French-Portuguese co-production fund (€80,000) and the National Film Centre of Latvia (€72,000).

Filming for In the Dusk started in Lithuania in December 2018, and the movie will be ready for theatrical release in the spring of 2020.
