Vittula rocks

The director Reza Bagher is planning make a film of Populärmusik från Vittula (Rock Music from Vittula), based on the book of the same name by Mikael Niemi that has been translated and published across Europe. Bagher has already directed Wings Of Glass and Capricciosa, which is to be released in Swedish cinemas on August 29.

Shooting on this new film started on August 18 in Pajala, in Northern Sweden. The story is set in the ’60s and ’70s, in the conservative and rigid society of the Tornedalia region, and focuses on the childhood and adolescence of Matti and Niilla, and their dream to become rock stars. The screenplay for Populärmusik från Vittula has been written by the director, together with Eric Norberg. It is produced by Happy End Filmproductions in collaboration with Svensk Filmindustri AB, Decarbonise Studio, Filmpool Nord, the Nordic Film & TV Fund and Finska Filmstiftelsen. The production has been given funding worth SKR7m (approximately €766,000) from the SFI- Swedish Film Institute, and it will be ready for release in 2004.
