For the first time ever, the competition jury of the Cannes Film Festival will be chaired by a Mexican, as filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu has been chosen to officiate at the 72nd edition (14-25 May 2019) of the world’s most important film gathering. He follows in the footsteps of Australia’s Cate Blanchett, who presided over the jury at the 2018 edition of the festival headed up by duo Pierre Lescure (President) and Thierry Frémaux (General Delegate). Interestingly, this is only the second time in the history of the event that the jury has been chaired by a Latin American, after Guatemalan author Miguel Ángel Asturias did the honours in 1970.

Considered by Lescure and Frémaux to be “a daring filmmaker and a director who is full of surprises”, but also “a man of conviction and an artist of his time", Alejandro González Iñárritu has taken part in Cannes four times in the course of his career: in the Critics’ Week in 2000 with Amores Perros, then in the Official Competition with Babel (winner of the Best Director Award in 2006) and Biutiful [+see also:

(which earned Javier Bardem the Best Actor Award in 2010), and finally with the virtual-reality installation Flesh and Sand, presented in the Official Selection in 2017. As a reminder, the Mexican helmer also directed 21 Grams (2003), and his two most recent movies were recognised at the Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography for Birdman in 2015, and Best Director, Best Actor and Best Cinematography for The Revenant in 2016).

The director had the following to say about his appointment as chair of the Cannes jury: "Cannes is a festival that has been important to me since the beginning of my career. I am humbled and thrilled to return this year with the immense honour of presiding over the jury. Cinema runs through the veins of the planet, and this festival has been its heart. We on the jury will have the privilege of witnessing the new and excellent work of fellow filmmakers from all over the planet. This is a true delight and a responsibility that we will assume with passion and devotion."
