A few days ago, we reported that Foodie Love is the title of the series that Catalan filmmaker Isabel Coixet is due to shoot for HBO Europe (see the news). Now, in addition to this and Patria, set to be helmed by Félix Viscarret and Óscar Pedraza (following the departure of Argentina’s Pablo Trapero, who had been scheduled to direct, it was reported), a third Spanish production is being made for the European streaming channel: Álex de la Iglesia is currently engrossed in the pre-production of 30 Coins [+see also:

, a 100% pure horror series that promises to deliver an overdose of fear, malevolent creatures, unbridled action and no end of surprises.

The title refers to the 30 pieces of silver for which, according to the Bible, Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus Christ so that the Romans would crucify him. One of these coins is in the possession of Father Vergara, a priest with a murky past, who comes to carry out his profession in a remote village ensconced in a spooky corner of Spain. It will consist of eight one-hour episodes that will be scripted by the director himself together with his friend and regular writing partner Jorge Guerricaecheverría.

stated, “This is a project that, after a great deal of work, is finally becoming a reality. Thriller, action and mystery come together in the bowels of a remote village in Spain, and spread over the entire world… It’s a naked look into the truest form of genre aimed at entertaining fans and ruining their sleep. Weird creatures, cursed cults and unspeakable secrets will emerge from the cracks of a reality that can only inspire mistrust in those who dare to explore it… An exhilarating experience for those who want to have fun while getting their horror fix.”

In the words of Miguel Salvat, executive producer at HBO Europe: “Only Álex, with his own unique voice and universe, can carry out a project of such narrative and visual ambition. It has been a fruitful and exciting development process with Álex and Jorge. We are sure that 30 Coins will fit perfectly into a brand that already has a huge legacy.”

, directed by Koldo Serra, in cinemas just a few weeks ago – has already made various forays into television: in 2006, he helmed The Baby’s Room, a chapter of the TVE television series Películas para no dormir (based on the legendary Historias para no dormir by acclaimed maestro Chicho Ibáñez Serrador), and in 2008 and 2009, he directed the fun-filled galactic fantasy Plutón B.R.B. Nero, starring Carolina Bang, Antonio Gil, Carlos Areces and Manuel Tallafé.

30 Coins is being produced by Pokeepsie Films for HBO Europe.
