Danish films win out

According to figures published by Statistics Denmark, on an average Danish films were seen by twice as many cinemagoers as US films during the first six months of 2003, with 13 Danish releases and an average of 156,000 tickets sold per film against 50 US releases and an average of 68,000 admissions per film.

With two million tickets sold over that period, Danish films represented 32% of the domestic market. Three local titles were in the top 10 box office: Per Fly's The Inheritance (369,000 admissions), Charlotte Sachs Bostrup's Anja after Viktor (339,000) and Anders Thomas Jensen's The green butchers [+see also:

(223,000), and five other Danish films were in the top 20, each attracting over 100,000 people.

The total number of admissions in Denmark during the first six months of 2003 increased by 1% to 6.3 million. National titles are also doing well in other media according to the latest weekly figures from video and DVD rentals in Denmark which show that Inheritance, Old, New, Borrowed and Blue and Midsummer are among the five favourite titles.
