Crisis for Porto Cinemas

by

One of the most important, traditional-style cinemas in Porto has closed its doors. The Passos Manuel Theatre, which was one of the last remaining cinemas located in the downtown area of the city, was closed at the end of August. The move follows a dispute between the cinema’s owners, (AACP) and the Medeia Group, which ran the operation.

This latest closure comes in the wake of a series of other cinemas shutting down in Porto, including the Charlot, Lumière, Estúdio 400, Trindade, Batalha, Águia d’Ouro and the Terço.
These smaller, city-centre cinemas have suffered following the opening up of a series of multi-screens, located in out-of-town shopping malls.
There is now only one traditional cinema left in the centre of Porto, the Nun’Alvares, but, given the current climate, experts fear that this may be the next victim in this crisis.
