New Training for Film Industry

A multi-million pound plan to encourage and support film training in the UK is due to be announced on September 10. The programme is being run by Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the Audiovisual industries, and the UK Film Council. More than 350 film professionals from the British film industry are expected to attend the launch of the initiative, called ’A bigger future, the UK film skills strategy’.
In the meantime, the Skills Investment Fund (SIF), the organisation that provides training to the British film industry, has just reached a budget of £2million, thanks to the contributions from UK based film productions and feature films made with public funding, which contribute 0.5% of their budget to the Fund.
The SIF was set up in 1999 by the UK government to address the skills shortage and gaps within the UK film industry. The last feature film that contributed to SIF was Deepa Mehta’s The Republic of Love produced by Dan Films. SIF is managed by Skillset, and its work is monitored by the UK Department for Culture Media and Sport.
