Having turned heads with his short films, such as Acid (in the national competition at Clermont-Ferrand in 2018 and in the international competition at this year’s Sundance) and Ses souffles (shortlisted for a nomination for the César Award for Best Short Film in 2016), the director belongs to the first batch of auteurs selected with their feature-length projects to benefit from the CNC’s support scheme in favour of genre films.

Standing out among the cast are Suliane Brahim (a Comédie Française pensionnaire who played the role of major Laurène Weiss in the series Black Spot, initially aired on France 2 and currently proving to be a smash hit on Netflix, particularly in the UK) and Sofiane Khammes (Chouf [+see also:

The story, written by Jérôme Genevray and Franck Victor, revolves around a single mother who, in order to save her farm from bankruptcy, breeds edible grasshoppers and develops a strange, obsessive relationship with them. She must then face the hostility of the local farmers in the area and that of her children, who no longer recognise her…

"It’s the chronicle of a woman who takes the wrong path. I envisage it as a blend of genre film and arthouse cinema, as the movie will develop a theme, a message, using the fantastic genre," the filmmaker explains.

Produced by Thierry Lounas for Capricci Production and by Manuel Chiche for The Jokers Films, The Swarm is being co-produced and has been pre-purchased by Arte France Cinéma. In addition to being pre-purchased by Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature is also being backed by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Auvergne Rhône-Alpes regions, where the six-week shoot is taking place. The French distribution will be handled by Les Bookmakers, while the international sales will be entrusted to Wild Bunch.
