- The story of sexual obsession in the book by Patrick McGrath 'Asylum' is the basis for the next film by the director of the acclaimed Young Adam. Filming on Asylum has started in Leeds

David Mackenzie, the director of the acclaimed Young Adam is currently filming his new feature film: Asylum based on Patrick McGrath’s novel of erotic obsession.

Set in the late 1950s in a psychiatric hospital, the film tells the passionate love affair between the wife (Natasha Richardson) of the new deputy director of the hospital (Hugh Bonneville from Iris) and a charismatic inmate (Marton Csokas seen in the New Zealand film, Rain). Other key cast members include Ian McKellen (Gods and Monsters), Joss Ackland (K-19: The Widowmaker), Sean Harris (24 Hour Party People) and Judy Parfitt (Girl With a Pearl Earring).

The film is produced by Mace Neufeld (The Hunt For Red October) and Laurence Borg (Little Voice) and co-produced by Samson Films and executive-produced by Michael Barlow, Chris Curling and Robert Rehme.
The US independent company Seven Arts Picture has been involved in the financing of the film and is handling international sales through Seven Arts International. Now shooting in Leeds, the production will move to Dublin and its surroundings with a wrap date set for mid-October. US distribution will be handled by Paramount Classics.
