Liverpool gets £6m funding

The UK's new 'Capital of Culture 2008' has just been awarded £6m from the EU & Merseyside Objective One Programme to develop and stimulate all film, TV and media activities in North West England. The new cash injection will be managed by North West Vision (NWV), the Regional Screen Agency covering the North West of England and funded by the UK Film Council, which had bid for the money. The grant will be used to create some 217 new jobs as a result of investing in local companies and film and TV programmes, and to encourage co-productions.
"TV and film industries are built on creativity but they need the money to grow", said Steve Morrison, Chair of NWV and new owner of Chrysalis TV. "NWV is a studio for new talent and now has a fantastic opportunity to invest in ground breaking new projects and provide opportunities for local people".
Nicknamed the 'Hollywood of the North', Liverpool is amongst the most active film cities in the UK. The city is currently doubling up as New York for the remake of the film Alfie, starring Jude Law, and has previously been used for the shooting of the 51st State and The Hunt For Red October.
