, the first feature-length documentary by Kiev-born, Berlin-based director Natalija Yefimkina, will have its world premiere in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section of the 70th Berlinale (20 February-1 March).

According to the official synopsis, in post-Soviet Russia, there is a phenomenon besides ice fishing, matryoshkas and vodka: the garage settlement. Tin huts, appearing inhospitable from the outside, provide a refuge for a large number of Russians – mainly men. In accordance with the occupants’ own taste and without adhering to any rules, alternative habitats are created with ingenuity and tenacity on nothing but a few square meters. Scrap collector Ilya uses the garage as a production facility, Roman uses it for his quail breeding, Pavel skilfully carves figures of saints, and Viktor has added four underground floors to his space over the decades. Everything is here, and everything seems possible.

The garages are an expression of a retreat into the private sphere, an escape from everyday life. Beyond the Arctic Circle, in a harsh area where a mining company is the only employer, the garages remain the last chance for self-realisation – and come across as diverse as the dreams of their owners.

The film was produced by Hamburg-based Tamtam Films, in co-production with MDR and in cooperation with ARTE.

“For us, it is a great joy and honour to be able to show Garage People at this year’s Berlinale for the very first time – and also to have already found our ‘partners in crime’ for all our future endeavours: Rise and Shine, which is taking care of the world sales, and MissingFILMs, which will handle our German theatrical release later this year. After more than four years of developing, shooting and editing Garage People, it feels right just to let go, present it to our audiences and, hopefully, starting here, be able to find garage lovers in all parts of the world," says producer Andrea Schütte, of Tamtam Films.

Garage People will have its world premiere on Wednesday 26 February at the Kino International.
