Adventure and family films were the most popular, such as Pirates of the Caribbean number one at the box office taking £18.6m across the month, followed by Terminator 3 (£17.7m), and the sequels American Pie 3 (£12.4m), Spy Kids 3D (£5.8m) and Legally Blonde 2 (£5.1m).

As many as 17.1 million tickets in total were sold during one of the hottest months in history thanks to an “impressive line up of film products that had a definite impact on admissions”, according to Christine Costello, the vice-president of the Cinema Advertising Association (CAA). Expectations are high now on Disney’s Finding Nemo, one of the highest grossing films of the year in the US, that will open in the UK on October 10.
