Emergence: Try your luck

by

Entries soon have to be sent in to take part in the international university summer school, Emergence . Aspiring directors have until October 30 to send in their dossiers and take part in the selection process. Every year Emergence chooses to help 8 youngsters make their first feature length film, giving advice and feedback from important professionals working in the film world.

The next stage in the selection process for this upcoming 6th edition of the training programme, will go on until the end of January 2004, when a jury made up of cinema professionals and well known names will choose the 8 lucky ‘trainees’. To take part in the selection you have to send in a screenplay for a first or second work, written in French, and you have to have had at least 3 years experience in the audio-visual field (or have had a significant role in the making of a feature length film) and the support of a producer. At the end of May, after having worked on the film and organised a cast, the 8 participants will meet up for a 3 week session in Provenza. They’ll start off by directing a scene written by an experienced director, before moving on to tackling one or two scenes from their own films, covering the whole process, including editing and mixing.
Directors and professional actors will be contributing to the course, as well as technicians, available on hand to help the young directors with their expertise. There will also be contributions from other European professionals, thanks to the university’s close links with Germany (DFFB - Deutsche Film und Fernsehakademie de Berlin), Britain (NFTS - National Film Television School in London) and Spain (SGAE - Sociedad General de Autores y Editores de Madrid).
