(2016), Paco León proved that sexual variations, polyamory and fetishism were a bit of fun and, incidentally, the order of the day and, as such, they shouldn’t be taken too seriously, but rather experienced as wholly normal events. Instant Love [+see also:

, the first feature film by the duo composed of Juanjo Moscardó and Suso Imbernón, and starring Enrique Arce, Lorena López, Macarena Gómez and Luis Miguel Seguí, follows along the same light-hearted and steamy lines, even if, sadly, it doesn’t reach the same levels of originality and enthusiasm as those abounding in the afore-mentioned film by the actor, showman and director from Seville.

The film in question – based on a screenplay by Moscardó, María Mínguez and María Laura Gargarella – focuses on a long-married couple living in a loft in the Carmen district of Valencia, who, in an attempt to add some spice to their straight-laced lives, decide to organise a sexual encounter with two friends/acquaintances. The initiative bodes well, for the characters and for the audience, but things won’t go entirely to plan...

Firstly, and clearly, their marriage is navigating muddy waters, which really start to stink when their mischievous plan to have sex with third parties is about to be enacted. At the same time, the other two people convened meet, get to know one another and, naturally, feel an attraction: here, the film juxtaposes the freshness of first sexual explosions with the established routines of couples who no longer experiment with the element of surprise.

With lots of dialogue and a bit of action – of a kind the reader can well imagine – Instant Love analyses feelings that are often simply referred to as sex, and, ultimately promising more naughtiness than it actually delivers, the film becomes a nigh-on theatrical vaudeville offering – there are hardly any outdoor scenes – where Macarena Gómez shines in the role of a liberated woman, and an outstanding Luis Miguel Seguí lends his playboy character just enough charisma to appeal to the public.

Instant Love is produced by Cosabona Films and Cilantro Films, and is distributed in Spain by Begin Again Films who are releasing the title in cinemas on Friday 24 July. The film enjoys the backing of Valencia’s Cultural Institute IVAC and À Punt Media.
