Eight fiction films and 11 non-fiction titles, plus three special screenings, comprise the jam-packed Out of Competition programme of the 77th Venice Film Festival (2-12 September), as announced by artistic director Alberto Barbera this morning during a live-streamed press conference (see the news on the Venice 77 and Orizzonti competitions).

Among the works of fiction on this list, besides the previously announced opening film (The Ties [+see also:

by Salvatore Mereu, an “unmissable” film, according to Barbera, starring Fabrizio Rongione, Barbora Bobulova, and author and poet Gavino Ledda. Set in rural Sardinia, it hinges on an agritourism business that aims to enable people, particularly tourists from Northern Europe, to immerse themselves in the traditional bucolic way of life on Sardinia.

by Luca Guadagnino, a “fearless biopic” that pieces together the fascinating human, artistic and entrepreneurial story of cobbler to the stars Salvatore Ferragamo, from his childhood in Bonito (Avellino), where he made his very first shoes, to his voyage to America in search of his fortune, from his experiences in Hollywood to his return to Italy, and from his near-bankruptcy to the renaissance of his Florence workshop.
