Florian Hoffmann, whose documentary Arlette - Courage Is a Muscle was part of IDFA’s Competition for Student Documentary and the IDFA DOC U Competition in 2015, is currently readying his next film, Whispers of War [+see also:

. A graduate of the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB), Hoffman is now preparing a drama that centres on Khalil, a Berlin school teacher who comes across war footage from his Kurdish hometown of Cizre. As he joins a community of video activists fighting to draw international attention to the issue and hopes to reconnect with his sister, a camera operator in the combat zone, Khalil begins to question his values and wonder whether he should abandon his life in Berlin.

The film, which will be spoken in German and Kurdish, will star Hadi Khanjanpour as Khalil. Among the cast are also Kristin Suckow, Jeanette Hain, and Aziz Capkurt.

With Carmen Treichl on board as cinematographer, filming took place in Germany between 29 October and 6 December 2019. Produced by Alexander Wadouh, Roxana Richters and Anna Werner for Chromosom Film, Whispers of War is currently in post-production. The theatrical release is scheduled for 2021.
