, which had been the favourite for the Ensor Awards, has proven the predictions right by winning seven gongs, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Mielants’ first attempt thus proved to be a masterstroke for him. Patrick is a unique, and very Belgian, tragicomedy about a solitary forty-something man who suffers two tragedies in quick succession: the loss of his father, and the loss of his favourite hammer. Somehow, he will have to cope, while taking over the management of the naturist campsite that he has just inherited, and which is the object of countless desires…

For his turn as Patrick, Kevin Janssens, typically a brawny romantic male lead in young Flemish cinema, put on 20 kg and abandoned his sense of fashion. He depicts the grumpy old bachelor with conviction, and thus earned himself the Ensor for Best Actor for this performance worthy of the Actors Studio.

And so this marks a glittering end to this feature debut’s run, after it also recently got a release in the UK. Soon, Tim Mielants’ name will be found on the credits of Nobody Has To Know [+see also:

Besides Patrick, the evening saw another big winner in the shape of The Twelve, a legal series that is currently proving to be a hit in Flanders. Indeed, one of the defining features of the Ensors is that they combine film and television, which undoubtedly makes sense in Flanders, where talents drift from one to the other with ease. Certain prizes, like Best Editing, even pit series and films against one another.

(Lunanime and Submarine), Best Newcomer of the Year to young filmmaker Anthony Nti (the director of the short film Good Night), the Box Office Award to F.C. De Kampioenen 4: Viva Boma! by Jan Verheyen, the Albert Bert Award for International Breakthrough to Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, and the Lifetime Achievement Award to Jaak Van Assche and Erwin Provoost.
