In the heart of the archives

Today is the last day of the second edition of the European Study Days on Film Archives , an event which started on October 8 in Paris. This year for the first time the event has become a partner of Cinedays. The whole programme has been organised by the BiFi (Film Library), and these professional meetings involve the institutions responsible for overseeing our cinematographic heritage, the specialist archivists and bodies involved with training. The theme of this year’s event was “Safeguarding, enriching and using: a new balance and training programme”.

The delegates from around Europe were welcomed to the event in the French National Library by the director general of the Centre National de la Cinématographie - CNC, David Kessler. They discussed the current state of the film archives via a series of 25 specific topics. Those who took part included a host of well known names from the European film world, like Marc Vernet (BiFi), Gabrielle Claes (Cinémathèque royale de Belgique), the Italian Sergio Toffetti (National Film Museum), the researchers Thomas Elsaesser (Amsterdam University) and Heide Schlüpmann (Frankfurt University), Michèle Aubert (French Film Archives, CNC), Boris Todorovitch (CNC), Marie-Claire Amblard (INA), Jean-Michel Frodon (Cahiers du Cinéma), Serge Toubiana (Cinémathèque française) and Alain Bergala (FEMIS).
