CINEDAYS 2003 France

Greek cinema in Strasbourg

by

Not one new Greek film was distributed in French cinemas during 2003. A lack of visibility that makes the Quinzaine of Greek Cinema , organised from 15th to 28th October by the Odyssée Cinema of Strasbourg even more precious. The 12th edition of the event, this year part of Cinedays, will present 8 recent feature-length films, which demonstrate the variety of the talent in Greek cinema, which is still rather unknown outside of Greece.

The event was inaugurated last night in the presence of Costas Vrettakos (Greek Eurimages representative), with the screening of Penny Panayotopoulou’s film, Hard goodbyes: my father . There will be three screenings followed by debates on 16th, 17th and 18th October at 20:30, when viewers can meet the directors, Robert Manthoulis for Lilly's Story [+see also:

Other films in the review, all presented in Greek with subtitles, and produced between 2000 and 2002 include: Evagora’s Vow by Andreas Pantzis with Georges Corraface and Valeria Golino, The King by Nikos Grammatikos, One day in August by Constantinos Giannaris and Kourastika na skotono tous agapitikous sou by Nikos Panayotopoulos.

Thanks to Odyssée cinema some Greek films will be seen in France during 2003. The Greek cinema review is part of the pan-European strategy that the cinema director, Farouk Gunalty, has already implemented, organising Polish, Turkish and Portuguese film reviews. The cinema also screens Great Classics from the Old World, such as the Roberto Rossellini retrospective, from 1st to 22nd October, which includes the masterpieces, Rome, open city, Paisan, Germany, Year Zero, Stromboli, Journey to Italy, and General Della Rovere.
