sees directors Pietro Marcello, Francesco Munzi and Alice Rohrwacher join forces in order to journey across Italy, where they meet girls and boys between 15 and 20 years of age and explore their ideas about the future.

Futura paints the portrait of a country as seen through the eyes of various adolescents, who talk about the places they inhabit, as well as their dreams and expectations, intertwined with their yearnings and their fears. “We met at the end of 2019 with the desire to make a film together”, Marcello, Munzi and Rohrwacher explain. “Each of us had been asked, over the course of our careers, to take part in collective works, directing one episode of a common project. However, directing one single episode places great limits on one’s ability to live a real shared experience. For us, working together first and foremost means watching how the other person works”.

“As such”, they continue, “from our very first meeting, the idea was to direct a genuinely collective work. This gave rise to Futura, a shared work which looks to tell the story of young Italians and to paint a portrait of our country as seen through their eyes and described by their voices”.

Produced by Avventurosa in league with RAI Cinema, the film enjoys the support of the Italian  Ministry for Culture, the Sardegna Film Commission and the Lazio Region, and is further backed by the Veneto Region. Futura will be presented in a world premiere at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, which is scheduled to run from 7 to 17 July.
