FESTIVALS Belgium

Tribute to the pioneers

by

The International Festival of Independent film of Brussels celebrates its 30th edition this year with the event that will take place from 4th to 9th November. The festival has been directed with exceptional passion for 30 years by Robert Malengreau, with a focus on committed, subjective films. Malengreau defends uncompromising films, whether Belgium, European or, more often, Asian, which demonstrate the freedom with which their filmmakers and writers, independent of the economic means available to them, have expressed themselves. This year, the screens of the Jacques Franck Cultural Centre will be deluged with 100 films chosen from all over the world. Special attention will be reserved for the cinema of Brazil which will open the festival with a screening of Mango Yellow by Claudio Assis, and for the cinema of Argentina which will close the event with a screening of Strange by Santiago Loza. A special section will also be dedicated to films shot in Super 8, and to the Belgian pioneers, Manuel Gomez, Marc-Henri Wajnberg, Jean-Claude Bronckart, Michel Lombet and Willy Kempeneers. The festival has always provided facilities for the hearing-impaired, and this year, European Year of the Handicapped, will host the 12th consecutive annual meeting on “The Deaf and Images: the future of the deaf in our society”.
