Directors Wolfgang Groos and Tobi Baumann are readying a six-part series inspired by one of the biggest media scandals of the post-war period: that surrounding the fake Hitler diaries written by Konrad Kujau, for which the German publication Stern bought the rights in 1983, and then sold them to various news outlets, only for the forgery to be exposed shortly after the material was published.

Based on the award-winning podcast Faking Hitler – The True Story of the Hitler Diaries by Stern, which examines the case using original tape recordings from the era of the scandal, Faking Hitler will tell the story from the forgery of the first diary to their publication, also encompassing the conviction of the protagonists. The film will centre on Stern reporter Gerd Heidemann, who buys the rights for the diaries from Konrad Kujau, and on Elisabeth Stöckel, a journalist at the magazine, who gets blackmailed about her father’s Nazi past in order to get her involved in the publishing of the diaries.

Among the star-studded cast of the upcoming six-part mini-series are Lars Eidinger, who will star as Stern reporter Gerd Heidemann, and Moritz Bleibtreu, who will play forger Konrad Kujau. Sinje Irslinger will breathe life into young journalist Elisabeth Stölzl. Further roles have been assigned to Daniel Donskoy, Ulrich Tukur, Hans-Jochen Wagner, Tristan Seith, Richard Sammel, Ronald Kukulies, Lukas T Sperber, Britta Hammelstein, Hanna Plaß, Jeanette Hain, Reiner Schöne, Ralf Dittrich and Katharina Heyer.

Faking Hitler is a UFA Fiction (Germany) production for TV Now, under the Bertelsmann Content Alliance umbrella. The series is part of TV Now’s cross-genre fiction campaign in cooperation with RTL. The series began shooting in April and is expected to be available to stream on TV Now from the end of 2021.
