The Viennale was set up as an alternative to the big festivals dominated by the market and by money, but this hasn’t hampered its success with the public, given that there are around 70,000 visitors to the event every year. It shows national and international premieres, and there are special section dedicated to experimental cinema and documentaries, as well as great historical retrospectives put on in collaboration with the Museum of Austrian cinema. The Viennale is also the occasion for the award of FIPRESCI prize form the international press, the Vienna Prize and the award given by the readers of the "Standard".
