25/08/2021 - The forum, which will unspool in hybrid form from 20-22 September, has invited teams from Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay

Fourteen projects hailing from seven countries have been selected for the tenth Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum. The event, which will form part of the 69th edition of the San Sebastián Film Festival, will take place from 20-22 September, in a hybrid format, with the chance to organise online meetings with industry professionals unable to travel to the Basque city in person.

The market has received a total of 200 projects this year. As is the case every year, the selected titles will be duking it out for the Award for Best Project at the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, the DALE! Award (Development Latin America-Europe) and the ArteKino International Award.

As for this year’s selection, a number of directors who previously took part in the festival with their feature debuts are coming back to San Sebastián with the projects for their sophomore features, such as Argentina’s Romina Paula (winner of the Horizontes Award in 2019 with Again Once Again) and her fellow countryman Francisco Marise (who participated in New Directors in 2018 with To War [+see also:

They are joined by another Argentinian, Inés Barrionuevo (who will simultaneously be vying for the Golden Shell with her Camila Comes Out Tonight), Uruguay’s Agustín Banchero (who, in turn, will be taking part in New Directors with Hilda’s Short Summer), plus Colombia’s Juan Andrés Arango and Argentina’s Paula Hernández, whose respective films La Playa DC [+see also:

film profile] and The Sleepwalkers were screened in past editions of Horizontes Latinos.

Standing out among the remaining projects chosen, besides feature debuts by fresh-faced directors, are the Mexican movie by China’s Johnny Ma (who passed through the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2019 with To Live to Sing) and the new horror flick by Argentina’s Laura Casabé, which picked up an award at Sitges and has been co-written with Benjamín Naishtat.
