Funding for the Regions
The diversification of funding sources for cinema and audiovisual projects has to be conducted with more involvement from the regions. This is the aim of the Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC), which will be providing €10 million to support investments in production for 2004. To oversee this project, the parliamentarian Christian Kert has been appointed as head of promotion for the new support mechanism.
The French regions that currently invest the most in national production are the Ile-de-France (€10 million in 2003), the Rhône-Alpes region and PACA (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur). But the financial provisions for activities like film shoots are still at a low level, even though on the other hand side, they are known to be economically lucrative.
And this is the reason that the culture minister decided to create a specific mechanism for this type of funding last April, which will come into force from January 2004. Under this system for every €2 million invested in each region, the CNC will award €1 million (the maximum amount available for every region), starting from projects costing over €100,000. The CNC is hoping that this system can yield results, especially when viewed together with the agreements between the State and the Regions due to start next year.
One important development has been seen in Corsica, which is attracting more and more films, and which has just organised funding for the production of feature length films being made on the island in 2004.
