British filmmaker Peter Strickland seems to have a thing for eccentrically enclosed worlds, with his characters shutting themselves away in their passions: after a giallo Foley workshop in Berberian Sound Studio [+see also:

, he is taking on a research facility “devoted to culinary and alimentary performance” in the upcoming Flux Gourmet.

Not announced prior to its production greenlight, the film quietly wrapped filming this summer, with an eclectic principal cast comprising Asa Butterfield (Sex Education, X+Y [+see also:

) in tow. The film is co-financed by the USA’s IFC Films, and UK-based Bankside Films and Head Gear/Metrol Technology.

As for the plot, at the aforementioned food research institute, a collective finds itself embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas and gastrointestinal disorders. Strickland put it so in a statement: “Flux Gourmet came about through a personal frustration with how alimentary disorders or food allergies have been comically portrayed in some films, and without wanting to embark on a finger-wagging mission, I wanted to write something devoted to the disruptions of the stomach whilst attempting to maintain a degree of dignity to deeply private and embarrassing symptoms.” Already invoking The Lobster and Little Joe [+see also:

in its conceptual focus and transnational cast, we can surely pre-envisage many looming overhead tracking shots of gourmet ingredients and ornate dishes.

“Peter Strickland’s films are unmistakable in their visual style and brilliant narratives, and he consistently confronts audiences in a way that challenges and rewards each time,” said IFC Films president Arianna Bocco. “We are thrilled to continue to work with such a singular talent as Peter, and to partner with Bankside Films and the incredible filmmaking team who worked so hard to get this film off the ground.” IFC Films is seldom involved in projects at this early production stage, a sign of their confidence in Strickland’s vision.
