The first Cologne Biennale

On October 26, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne was the venue for the inauguration of the first KunstFilmBiennale (cinematographic art biennale). The theme of this 2003 edition is "art films, art in cinema and films concerning art", as announced by the artistic director of the event, Heinz Peter Schwerfel.

As part of the international competition, being held until November 6, there will be more than 60 works screened, made up of feature length films, short works, documentaries and animation films made by famous artists from around the world. Other events taking place during the Biennale include a retrospective dedicated to the French director Alain Fleischer and a tribute to the artist Brakhage who died in March. There will also be screenings of a series of films from France and the Benelux countries. The winner of the competition will be given a prize of €15,000 from the NRW Filmstiftung.
