The Berlinale Series Market unveils its selection
- The new season of the market features a slate of discussions focusing on the current trends in series, while the Berlinale Series Market Selects label returns with 17 series in total
The eighth edition of the Berlinale Series Market will unfold digitally as part of the European Film Market (EFM) from 14-16 February. As in previous years, the programme includes talks, showcases by international production companies, streaming platforms and series-focused events, online screenings and, under the Berlinale Series Market Selects label, a curated selection of high-quality series being traded on the market.
EFM director Dennis Ruh underlines: “The Berlinale Series Market has developed into an integral part of the EFM, reflecting the growing diversification of our exhibitors’ sales and promotional portfolios. What we offer here helps us create more visibility for serial content. Successfully introduced last year, the Berlinale Series Market Selects label has contributed significantly to this. I am especially pleased to note that we will be able to present a very international, varied selection this year. Through the conference programme, we will also offer our professional audience the chance to take a look at current developments in the industry.”
As for said conference programme, the focus will be on the current trends in the series business, and the opening panel, “MISSION: EUROPE. How Local Markets Muscle Up”, will delve into the varying perspectives of streamers, local TV stations and producers when it comes to European streaming business strategies. Well-known directors Lone Scherfig and Daniel Burman will present their series The Shift and Yosi, the Regretful Spy, respectively (see the news), and they will also take part in a conversation that traces their path from film directors to series makers.
Furthermore, a round of talks entitled “When the Power Shifts – A New Era for Producers?” will discuss the ever-greater demand for investment commitments in local markets by major streaming services, which already exist in France, for example, and will also ask how this could alter the role of production companies in the series sector. Also, the issue of inclusion will be addressed, and for the first time, the Berlinale Series Market is co-hosting a two-part series of talks with Series Mania debating whether and how talented individuals with disabilities are represented and included in the series industry, both in front of and behind the camera, and to what extent they are able to contribute their own stories and perspectives. Subsequent to this initial discussion in Berlin, the topic will be further explored in a conference format in Lille.
Regarding the showcases, “Up Next: Germany” presents current and upcoming series projects from Germany, including the comedy Greenlight – German Genius (see the news), the action series Kleo, the German-Israeli thriller Munich Match and the documentary series Reeperbahn Special Unit 65.
Moreover, for the second year running, Berlinale Series Market Selects is presenting 13 shows hailing from four continents. Furthermore, the short-form programme features four series, three of which are French productions.
