On 20 May, Sweden’s SF Studios announced it would be co-producing Lukas Moodysson's new outing, Together 99, the sequel to his 2000 hit Together, which was praised both in Sweden and internationally, and which sold around 2.5 million tickets worldwide. Principal photography for the new project will take place in the western part of Sweden from August to September. It is set in 1999, 24 years after the first chapter, and now the collective has turned into the world’s smallest. The commune consists of only two people, Göran and Klasse. As they are feeling a bit lonely, the idea occurs to them of organising a reunion with their old friends.

“The film will be funny, dark and warm-hearted – classic Moodysson. It’s a great pleasure to continue the story about Together,” said Lars Jönsson, producer at Swedish outfit Memfis Film.

Together 99 will be the world's saddest comedy. It’s about getting old, looking back, regretting everything you have done, or regretting nothing, lying awake at night missing someone you have not met in 20 years, longing for the past and looking forward. And about the collective – it has shrunk drastically, and there are not many of them left. Almost everyone has gone their separate ways. What has become of them? Has it gone well or badly? Who has become famous, and who has ended up in a madhouse? Are the dreams from the 1970s alive, or are they dead? Does Göran still eat porridge?” mused Moodysson.

Together 99 is being produced by Memfis Film in co-production with SF Studios and Film i Väst. SF Studios is tasked with distributing the film in the Nordic countries, whilst Denmark’s REinvent is in charge of its international sales. According to nordiskfilmogtvfond.com, REinvent has just closed its first pre-sales deals with September Film for the Benelux, and with Film Europe for the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The feature is expected to premiere in Swedish cinemas in September 2023, followed by an international release.
