The Sarajevo Film Festival (running 12-19 August) has just announced one of its most popular strands, the Avant Premiere Series section, which this year will showcase six series from established and up-and-coming talents from the region. Highlighting their immense audience interest, all of them will compete for the UniCredit Audience Award.

Meanwhile, the festival has also announced its closing night film, May Labour Day, by Bosnian-Herzegovinian director Pjer Žalica, following a Bosnian ex-pat in Germany who returns to his home town after ten years. Standouts from the Avant Premiere Series include Croatia’s Metropolitans, by creator Dario Vince, which takes place in the aftermath of both a mass earthquake and the pandemic, and follows tensions as tenants from the damaged city centre move to its outskirts. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Danis Tanović also has a new project, The Hollow, co-created with Amra Bakšić Čamo. This Bosnian-Herzegovinian production will be a mystery following a grizzled senior inspector forced to dive deep into today’s Sarajevo, in his search for a precious missing artefact.

Tina Hajon, a programmer of the Avant Premiere Series, made the following comment on the selection: "Regional production of high-end series is on the rise. The result is also visible in this year's selection, the sixth edition of Avant Premieres, where we proudly present a record number of six series from four countries in the region. They are different thematically, stylistically and in terms of genre. However, whether you are a fan of crime, comedy, mystery or drama, you will surely find at least one series in this selection that will delight you. You will eagerly wait for the fall to see the other episodes.”
