62 projects selected for the 23rd edition of Medimed Doc Market
by Cineuropa
- The event takes place from 10-14 October, and will enable the most promising filmmakers and prominent members of the industry to present a varied slate of documentary projects

The Euro-Mediterranean Documentary Market (Medimed) has unveiled the 62 documentary projects from 24 countries selected for its online 2022 edition. Celebrating its 23rd iteration this year, the co-production and co-financing market invites some of the most promising filmmakers and prominent members of the industry to present a varied slate of documentary projects at different stages of development. Medimed is taking place from 10-14 October and offers a range of Industry Talks, which will deal with different topics of interest to industry professionals, sponsored by the Creative Europe – MEDIA Office in Catalonia.
Among the 28 projects selected for the central Pitching Forum are Z-The War Machine by seasoned director Alain de Halleux and producer Rodolphe Dietrich, who delve deep into the armed conflict in Ukraine, reminding us that Europe is a victim of the economic war; and Armenian director Hakob Melkonyan’s promising project War Diary, in which he gets his hands on his grandfather’s diary from World War II and discovers that he went off fighting in solidarity with all the soldiers in countries in the vicinity of Armenia, including Ukraine. It is being produced by Laurence Uebersfeld.
Twelve projects at the early stages of development from ten countries have been selected for the second edition of New Players Pitch, the forum’s new section for fostering international co-productions. Catering to both established producers and up-and-comers who are committed to creative collaboration, the tailored professional platform will take place on the morning of Tuesday 11th, where meetings between 12 projects and 40 attending established producers will take place via short presentations and curated one-on-one sessions.
Eight projects have been selected for this year’s Rough Cut Advisory Meetings: notable titles include Baghdad on Fire, produced by Integral Films (Norway), which shows a young woman’s transformation while fighting for her rights and becoming more and more aware of her own desires and demands in Iran. In Slave Island, produced by Harald House (Belgium), we see the life of activist Jeremy Kewuan, who confronts the invisible power of ideology and faith on a remote island in Indonesia, known for its practising of slavery. In Tskaltubo, produced by Vars-Studio (Georgia), we meet a community of female refugees who have settled in an abandoned luxury hotel from the Soviet era.
In a series of 25-minute meetings, 19 projects from 11 different countries will come face to face with financiers, distributors, acquisitions executives and sales agents. They span different topics and points of view. For example, Homeland Security, produced by Enero Films (Spain), explores the hidden agenda behind Europe’s refugee crisis and the world’s arms industry. My Cousin Steven, produced by Bloom Media House (Italy), presents the story of the Italian family of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and their quest to gain recognition for the musical legacy at their roots. Finally, What we are not, produced by Screen Story (Norway), presents the House of Friele, a community of drag pioneers in Bergen, who share a dream but not always the same views.
The Medimed Doc Market is made possible by DIPLOCAT, the Catalan Institute of Cultural Industries (ICEC), the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), the Diputació de Barcelona and Sitges City Council. Medimed’s collaboration partners are the Creative Europe – MEDIA Office in Catalonia, Catalan Films, Televisió de Catalunya, the Doha Film Institute, the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image de la Tunisie and the producers’ associations DOCMA, PRODOCS, CIMA, Dones Visuals and German Documentaries.
