Tuesday 6 December will see the eighth edition of FOCUS-The Meeting Place for International Production unfolding in London’s Business Design Centre. The event is geared towards audiovisual sector professionals and dedicated to the locations, national and regional incentives, facilities and services available to the film world.

By virtue of a collaboration between MAECI, the Italian Ministry of Culture’s Film and Audiovisual Department, Agenzia ICE, Cinecittà and the Italian Film Commissions, and thanks to the participation of APE-the Italian Association of Executive Producers, Italy is set to enjoy a strong presence at this year’s Focus, with a national stand aimed at promoting the country’s expertise in terms of locations, technical industries and facilities for international co-productions.

The Italian space will be filled, this year, by 7 regional film commissions (Genoa-Liguria, Veneto, Rome-Lazio, Valle d’Aosta, Trentino, Calabria, Sardinia) who will promote their own areas and resources, and 6 executive production and technical industries companies who will get to present their services in the most advantageous way possible. Cinecittà will also be in attendance, promoting their own studios, which have been substantially renovated in recent years and can now offer virtual production by way of LED Volume.

The Italian Pavilion will also see visitors introduced to Italy for Movies, a portal for locations and production incentives created by Cinecittà in collaboration with the Italian Film Commissions, and coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Culture’s Film and Audiovisual Department. It’s a tool which is also available as an app, where you can find information on the benefits offered by tax credit, as well as on the production support funds available in Italy.

To fully illustrate the country’s appeal, a presentation on this subject is planned for 11.30am on 7 December, entitled Filming in Italy is Simply Extraordinary: The Italian audiovisual system at a glance, in which the director of the ICE office in London Giovanni Sacchi is set to speak, alongside Anica’s Head of Internationalisation and the Italian Ministry of Culture’s Head of Special Projects within the Film and Audiovisual Department Roberto Stabile, the Italian Ministry of Culture’s analyst and consultant for regulatory change Rossella Gaudio, Cinecittà’s Director of Marketing and Sales Lucia Milazzotto, President of the Italian Film Commissions Cristina Priarone, and representative of the Italian Association of Executive Producers Roberto Fedrigoni.

The Italian Ministry of Culture’s Film and Audiovisual Fund for 2022 totals just under 750 million euros, of which approximately 544 million will go towards tax incentives, 40 million to automatic subsidies, 44 million to selective contributions, 90.6 million to promotional activities for the film and audiovisual sector, 22.5 million to film activities for enhancing film sector skills, and 4 million to SMEs for the creation of audiovisual and cinematic products (according to Ministry sources).

The recent rise of the tax credit rate for national production, which is now 40% for films, and up to 40% for TV and web works, has seen Italy remaining especially attractive for international productions (in 2021, 217 co-production projects were funded by the Italian Ministry of Culture’s Film and Audiovisual Department). The 2022 tax credit session, dedicated to national film productions, research and training, TV, web and music videos, will remain open until 31 December.
