On 21 March, Fremantle Documentaries unveiled a new label dedicated to producing world-class, premium feature documentaries and series, to be known as Undeniable.

Undeniable was announced by Mandy Chang, Fremantle’s global head of Documentaries, at Copenhagen’s CPH:DOX (15-26 March). The official press release states that the new label “will develop and produce premium projects, and harness its global expertise to attract and work with high-profile talent and international commissioners”.

The ambition is to make “provocative, entertaining, diverse, and influential films and series that push the boundaries of storytelling and challenge assumptions about the world around us”, ranging from “investigative, geopolitical and single narrative stories to cultural landmark films, contemporary history, true crime and genre-busting biopics on a global scale”.

Andrea Scrosati, Fremantle Group’s COO and Continental Europe CEO, said: “In their first year, the exceptionally talented Fremantle Documentaries team has quickly established a diverse slate of projects. We are proud that Fremantle delivered 52 documentaries from our production companies around the world in 2022. The launch of Undeniable will form part of Fremantle’s growth strategy to boost our capabilities in documentaries, as we have successfully achieved in film and drama over recent years.”

Mandy Chang added:“The launch of Undeniable further underlines our commitment and ambition to build Fremantle’s documentary output on the premium side. Working with the very best filmmakers and emerging talent, the label will provide editorial and production expertise and support in multiple genres. Importantly, it will provide a platform and freedom for creative talent to unlock and explore important issues and for stories to be told.”

In its first year, Fremantle Documentaries announced the documentary Mrs. America, and supported productions like Kim’s Video and the fashion series Kingdom of Dreams.

Undeniable reported that it is “already developing several international projects and partnerships with high-profile, award-winning filmmakers”, such as Amy Berg (Deliver Us from Evil, Phoenix Rising), Chris Smith (Tiger King, Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives), Penny Lane (Hail Satan?) and Gabriel Sedgwick (Listening to Kenny G).

Meanwhile Fremantle’s acquisition spree seems unstoppable. On 23 March, the RTL-controlled production and distribution giant bought a majority stake in Belgium’s A Team Productions. Over the last 18 months, the group has acquired the UK’s Dancing Ledge, Italy’s Lux Vide, Australian-American TV production outfit Eureka Productions, US-based studio Fabel Entertainment, Ireland’s Element Pictures and Israel’s Silvio Productions, as well as 12 Nordic labels from Viaplay (formerly known as NENT).
