FESTIVALS Austria

Awards at the 2003 Viennale

by

The film The brown bunny by Vincent Gallo is the winner of Viennale 2003. The international jury of the FIPRESCI (led by its president, Cheuk-to Li from Hong Kong) gave the award "because of the courageous exploration of desire and pain, and for its radical detachment from the dominant tends in contemporary American cinema". There was also a special mention for the French film, Depuis qu'Otar est parti by Julie Bertuccelli.

The "Wiener Flmpreis" (the City of Vienna Prize) dedicated exclusively to Austrian cinema, was awarded to Jesus, du weisst (“Jesus, You Know”) by Ulrich Seidel. The author of Dog Days (2001) goes back to the documentary format to explore the controversial theme of the relationship between Austria and Catholicism, with 6 stories/confessions on the search for faith. Staying with the section dedicated to Austrian films, there was an award for Handbikemovie by Martin Bruch. Finally the jury for the "Der Standard" public prize chose Long way home by the American Peter Sollett as Best Film and it also awarded a special mention for the Argentinean, Ana y los otros by Celina Murga.
